House in a Barn – reel narration

This is the narration that accompanies our reel on House in a Barn, a former silage barn in West Oxfordshire that Artel31 designed and built as a new home.

Rather than clearing the site, we kept the barn’s steel portal frame and built a breathable timber house within it. The new house is clad in timber salvaged from the original structure, and the old concrete walls have been reused inside to give the home thermal mass. The generous volume left between the old frame and the new house became a series of sheltered outdoor spaces, sitting outside the thermal envelope yet part of everyday life.

A modern barn-like structure features wooden slats, metal beams, and translucent panels. The roof peaks at the centre, and the facade has geometric lines and textures. A small reflective pool sits in the foreground, echoing the structure's clean design.
